Without Search Engine Optimization, you could have a very frustrating online experience as a business owner. Here are four tips to help you make the most of your website optimization.
- SEO Tip #1 – Find, use, and highlight the RIGHT keywords and key phrases. There are multiple tools to use when you are searching for the right keywords for your website. Google’s keyword tool is essential and WordTracker is also a very good tool. These tools are best used when you start with generic, ambiguous words or phrases. Both will pull up information about how competitive phrases are and other recommendations that might help you get noticed more quickly.
- SEO Tip #2 – Use keywords and key phrases in your page titles. The first thing a search engine notices is the title of your page. The engine seeks information regarding what your site is about and it picks up signals from your title pages. If all you have is the name of the your company in the title page, you’re missing out on your best chance to help the engine index your page.
- SEO Tip #3 – Use keywords in your headers (h1, h2, h3, etc). Just like people, search engines skim your content to find the most important parts first. After picking up your title, they search the paragraph headings for confirmation that your content applies to the title you provided. No need to be spammy. Too many keywords or phrases in your headers will raise a red flag.
- SEO Tip #4 – Build links inside and outside your website. Links have become the holy grail of search engine optimization. For most local businesses links built on directories like local.com and merchantcircle.com will suffice. However, extremely competitive keywords call for a large number of links throughout good neighborhoods on the web.
Those aren’t the only things you need to do to improve your search engine rank, but they are an excellent start. Many companies out there will do just fine by incorporating these into their search engine optimization efforts.
